Effective Facebooking with Organized Bookmarks and Managed Applications.

Although this post should have come a bit early but as the old adage goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention”. I would rather call it a discovery essentially because I needed it. Not that I did not know about it but just that I never felt the need. Fortunately, this is something that really helps me, with each day adding up to bouts of addiction to me on FB.

The next few lines are about all the ways you could enhance your social networking experience via your Facebook profile. Some of these features are known to us, some are not, and the rest, we never paid heed to. I am talking of Bookmarks on your Facebook homepage on the right panel and the Applications that you use to network or kill your time.

Organizing Bookmarks

It is quite obvious that we might miss out on lot of live/news updates (status/links/photos/videos/notes/tags) of our friends which might interest us. As per my observation goes, not all updates are LIVE in true sense. Some get hidden and get updated later when we scroll down again to the older updates that we have already seen. But seldom we do that, with Fb pouring in so many, every second on the homepage walls. So, the best way out is to organize our bookmarks for quick access to updates of our friends that we might have missed ‘recently’. Here are the ways:

1. Links/Notes:

In my previous post, few months back I had discussed how to view all the Links/Notes of friends or just anyone’s by manipulating the URL, even if the links’/notes’ tabs/boxes are not present in their profile page ( I will be discussing how to set them in your profile later in this post). But the post is quite techie, n wouldn’t interest the common mass.

As shown in the picture below, now you could arrange the apps as per your choice, preferably, Links/Notes on top than Applications & Games which are defaulted by FB. You can do this by clicking on “Edit” and then drag and drop the apps as per your suitability. The encircled ‘X’ image implies you could remove it completely from Bookmarks too. However, you could always set it back. (discussed below)

2. Status Messages:

As far as my observations are concerned, not all status updates are caught by our eyes. Some just get skipped. So, all you have to do is click on Friends link-label and you get a drop down like this picture below:

Click to enlarge

Can you see a link-label as “Status Updates”? Well, clicking on that will give you all the recent updates by your friends. Now you don’t really miss any & don’t give a chance to your BFF as to why you didn’t comment/like such a witty status. The only disappointment here is there should be a node-subnode (+) icon shown that will make is know that there is something I need to follow-up. But only Facebook Developers know why they haven’t!

3. Photos/Videos:

You will be amused to see so many tagged videos and photos of friends you have missed on the updates. Here, you can catch everything once again. (See picture below)

Managing Applications

Now I feel you should take some time out to explore a bit on the Application Settings and trust me there’s so much of customization you could do! Here’s something to save your time. Better thank me for all the R n D done just to make you task easy! 🙂

1. Setting back or removing Bookmarks from Application Settings:

Click on Application Settings on Account. You see a page like this (image below)

click to enlarge

Now, Click on ‘Edit Settings’ for Social Interview (e.g.), go to Bookmark tab, you could select/deselect as per your preference from your homepage. (See below screenshot)

click to enlarge

2. Settings of Boxes/Tabs on profile page:

On the same Application Settings, you could do a bit more. By default FB provides Wall/Info on your profile page.
You have options to set your fave app as a tab or a box on your profile. Refer the screen-shot below on settings for Links.( A box appears on the right panel below your DP)

Same goes with Notes and other apps that give you an option to do so. You also could shuffle (using the + symbol at the end of Tabs) between various apps but in total only 6 could be accommodated. You could have a look at my profile now. (For people not on my FB friend list, I meant like this)

Well, until Facebook launches any additional features, I think this should be more than enough to keep you glued to it 24/7 now. 😉

Please let me know if I have missed anything somewhere and if it did help you. Comments/Questions/Suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Go ahead and share. Facebook for life!! 🙂

Just stuck my mind – the definition of Success which I almost got by rote during childhood to address the public, iff I ever got a chance! And I did.

Read these lines when I was a kid in a monthly/fortnightly magazine called “Wisdom”. Although, that very issue of Wisdom isn’t with me but I am so fortunate to be living in this ubiquitous world of Internet! Anything is searchable and retrievable!

The most inspiring lines to me since then were  “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived” which have always instigated me to work and feel the empathy for the deprived/destitute. I may not be truly dedicated in a total eradication or upliftment but I believe,  I could, as an individual who’s much better off than most people on earth, make a little contribution and make sure at least  ‘one life has breathed easier because I have lived’ in this world!!!

Here go the lines:

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better,
Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

When Cricket catches Capitalism.

History repeats itself. Perhaps we love to repeat history (2007 ICC Cricket World Cup) quite early. I am talking about a very popular Indian sports,  I am talking about the Indian Cricket at an International level – a game that’s almost present in every Indian blood by birth. But unfortunately this blood has gotten spurious and needs transfusion.

So, when was the last time you as an entire nation burst crackers, waved Indian tri-color flag, came out on the roads late in the night with that can of KF beer and danced away your happiness, unplugged? The last I remember was when the Men in Blue bagged the ICC World Cup T20 trophy back in 2007! When IPL never existed.

When India loses, the entire nation bleeds. When CSK/MI/RCB etc. lost, how many bled? It means a lot to the whole cricketing and non-cricketing nations to some extent, when a team is the World Champion. I repeat, WORLD Champs! How much did it matter to Australia/NZ/South Africa/England when CSK won the IPL championship?

It does carry immense weight when The President of a nation congratulates a National Team on their triumph and the heroes among them are awarded Bharat Ratna/ Padma Vibhusan/ Arjuna/Padma Bhusan awards. How many you think will win a National Award for giving their blood and sweat for the exhaustive IPL matches!! Still, they barely give a hoot. At the end of the day, it’s the buck that matters!

Human nature. Gluttony. When we ourselves, being in corporate industry slog for money and our tail points to the firm that lures us with a fatter one than the current’s.  And so are our players who haven’t woken up from the fantasy/voluptuous world of Sherlyn Chopra & Co. flaunting their silicones. After all,  Saheb…they are all single! So the attendance at the late night parties are quite inevitable for our bachelor boys, you see! Hence, quite unabashedly, the ones at the helm could direct the alibis to IPL’s late night parties and tortuous travels. They never got tired during IPL matches? There were quite a lot series played prior to IPL as well! Why can’t a single player say a BOLD NO to their team owner to practice for the ‘short pitch’ matches ahead? They can’t , because they are sold!

At the other hand, the selection committee would try to save the IPL baby for it’s quite lucrative for them. After all, we have our bureaucrats and politicians who have their murky deals & investments hidden in the entire Pandora’s box. Now what they could do is, blame the Indian Captain for blaming IPL. This is funny and this is a vicious circle.

But even if you wish to, you still cannot avoid catching the IPL frenzy, rather the most trending event being witnessed by a million Indians. Could you? So, why not join the bandwagon? But how? Pick up an IPL team, start updating statuses supporting the team & bashing the other team on Social Networks, even if cricket means quite less to you.  Welcome aboard,  you are catapulted to IPL mania now. But I always knew the consequence. Too much of cricket, be it post-IPL or pre-IPL, can never hold on to the charm. Needless to say why IPL is ostensibly ‘charming’ !

Could we ever have the 1983/2007 (ODI/T20)  history repeated? We surely could if we could stop cricket getting invaded by capitalists! As mentioned by few remarkable cricketers, if we could have a team dedicated solely for 20/20 for there ain’t a dearth of talent in India. Rather new talents can be discovered and nurtured, it means an opportunity for many Ranji players who never made it in the past and tough to make it in the future. It also means they make a better livelihood and make some bucks for exploiting their talent and that should get duly recognized!

For God’s sake, I do not wish to see the shamefully abysmal performance repeated again in the ICC World Cup 2011. If that happens, we Indians have lost our sense of cricket. We rather love to be swayed away with short-lived yet libidinous pomp and show!

Last but not the least, few old memories…

P.S. This is my personal opinion. Facts may have been wrong. Your opinions/suggestions would be highly appreciated.

The whole Orkut shit on Facebook!

I hate to see the whole ORKUT shit coming on to taint Facebook now!! Fake profiles getting added each day to Fb endlessly & people adding those FAKE profiles mindlessly. May be with a hope to increase the counts of LIKE(s) or COMMENT(s) (that seldom come) on their posts !

Fb exercises a bit of stringent privacy policies, though a chink in the armor can’t be unavoidable. Any profile picture with explicit nudity is detected by Fb and soon the profile is quarantined.

Same goes in case you send friend requests ruthlessly just because you are fond of ogling at those mid-riffs on the profile pics which is of Paula but owned by Paul!

By adding these fake profiles we not only make ourselves [Privacy Settings:Only Friends] vulnerable but make Friends-of-Friends profiles exposed to the voyeurs/impersonators. This is because to the outside world, by default only ‘Info’ tab is visible and ‘Wall’ only if you have made it ‘Everyone’ in your settings.

All I would suggest at the end of the day is:
1.  Visit the profile once before adding the person. An interaction via emails helps judge the authenticity.
2.  A 4 digit no. in the friend-list is mostly for celebrities. Quite possible for a normal person too, but you have to ‘judge’ before you add.
3.  If the profile info has a blog link, visit the blog lest you think it’s fishy.
4.  Click on the display image (if enabled) to see the profile pics that give the sense it’s quite right!
5. See the personal info. Too much of geeky info + IIT/IIM/Foreign University is an alarming call.

One such profile is this which is nothing but an impersonated profile photo of a lady I know! And I can’t believe I have 8 mutual friends between she (apparently he) and me!

Well, no more being gracious & showering your potions of beauty or amity! Chuck them right away! (Click ‘Remove from Friends’)

I hated it when even a right-click was disabled on Orkut for photos in albums and no way you could see a person’s original pic for the display would always have a ‘bouquet’ or a ‘teddy’, so much was this impersonation/morphing scare. One out of the many factors has done the damage to Orkut.  So, too much of privacy sucks the Orkut way! But then being conscious of the way we do Social Networking, does matter.

The very essence of this post is to make Facebook a better place by an individual’s conscience/effort. And not make everything an onus on the Facebook Developers to take care. Lets keep Facebook clean before it becomes Fakebook! And all yo FB addicts like me, do spread the word.

Facebook is my lifeline. & I am one step away from it. And that is nothing but getting an id ‘ *****@facebook.com’. But then I quite love the place I work right now! 🙂

Born to……………..

All about Profile Info layout changes on Facebook.

As a developer myself, I am sure Facebook developers are suffering from Insomnia and love to work on graveyard shifts. And eventually making us sleep less with the addiction they offer each day! Some new changes, some more R n D to learn, and some more time to adapt to them. Whatever, Hail Facebook, Hail Zuckerberg! It’s simply redefining the concept on social networking.

If Google and Apple were known for innovations for what could have been well-nigh unthinkable for a common man…Fb is doing it to the social networks on the same lines.

So, here we go..the latest set of changes on your Profile Info. Looks cool? Looks yuck? Previous was better? I tried sticking to the older layout as much as I could, but I would not be allowed to edit unless I incorporate the changes by FB on my profile. So, I had to! 😦

However, I found the business rule/idea behind it to be pretty cool. Whatever you chose as your favorites stuffs (from the auto-suggest drop down) apparently are linked to the FAN PAGES which have a LIKE button instead of a BECOME A FAN button! For e.g. On ‘Likes and Interests’ segment, if you are fond of the ‘Television’ show Man vs. Wild with Bear Grylls, then clicking on it takes you to the fan page on Facebook!

This isn’t all! Other way round, if you haven’t put it as your fave TV show on your profile info, just hitting the LIKE button on the fan page you stumbled upon or were suggested by you friend, gets it added to your interest automatically!

Speaking on display of the thumbnail-icons: by default – your first choice takes the priority! However, you could choose your own just by clicking on the bubble and save the changes! Now the question is you LIKE-d a fan page but you don’t wish FB to show it among your favorite lists that’s visible to all (FB restricts it to 15). For eg. I join a news network/page to get the latest news feed but I ain’t really fond of Arnab Goswami ( he never pauses when he interviews others), so wouldn’t like it to be displayed on your list….

What would you do in that case? A. Hide it!

How? Click on the bubble, now drag and drop below the line (refer screenshot). However, once the user clicks on Show All(<No.>), the entire list would expand. The way to remove it completely is to UNLIKE the page or click on the bubble, then click remove.

Click to enlarge

One thing to notice here is, if more than 15, certain bubbles might just be taken to hidden box by default! But you could drag it back to the top box area, so that our choices are visible to others! [Shuffle among 15] (image below)

So, guys…what yall are waiting for? Choose your best fan page/show/interest and flaunt your choices! As an avid Facebook follower, I definitely would not love to see something like this when I stumble upon your profile info.! 🙂

Suggestions/Questions/Acknowledgments are always welcome!
